HBO's the Wire Blog
I spent a lot of time this weekend watching the Wire. So good. And when I was looking around the web for some info, I found that there wasn't a simple place with a lot of good links on the show. There probably is but maybe google just couldn't find it for me? So I threw some together on a new blog and added a newsfeed about the show as well.

Birthday Hulk
"And so on and so on. The Birthday Hulk became a bit more subtle in later years, though her antics include forcing boys to make out with her, BECAUSE IT'S HER SPECIAL DAY, knocking people to the ground on a dance floor with her wildly flailing elbows, because BIRTHDAY HULK OWNS THIS SONG, BITCH!, and throwing a bowling ball smack into an innocent car parked on the street. What? BIRTHDAY HULK DOESN'T KNOW HER OWN STRENGTH!"

Our Meeting with Song Sung-young
Sometimes it's nice to read about people using the internet to connect for purposes other than sex and money. Like visiting families in another country to see how they live. And, I can't say this strongly enough, not have sex with them. God, what's with you and the always trying to get it on thing? The link above is from the perspective of the French woman who visits a Korean farmer/reporter, and here is a report by the Korean farmer she visits. It's all very nice.

Katherine Harris is not just scary looking, she's scary in the inside, where it counts
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris told a religious journal that separation of church and state is "a lie" and God and the nation's founding fathers did not intend the country be "a nation of secular laws." "If you're not electing Christians, then in essence you are going to legislate sin," Harris said. Separation of church and state is "a lie we have been told," Harris said in the interview, published Thursday, saying separating religion and politics is "wrong because God is the one who chooses our rulers."

ruined music
"But perhaps the worst thing about the breakup is the fact that music gets caught in the fallout. Everyone has a song, album, artist, or band that’s been ruined by an ex (or, more accurately, by memories of an ex). Ruined Music is the place to talk about the music you’ve lost: the songs you can’t stand to hear ever again, that record she always played when she was over at your house, the band you went to see together a week before he called it quits, That Song that was on That Mix, the record that was playing the night you (fill in the blank), the album you got for a Valentine’s Day gift." I myself can't listen to "My Humps" anymore.

Yukgaejang is good when you have a cold cause it clears out your head (spicy) and Samgye-tang is one of the best, simple yet elegant chicken soups I've ever had (but don't forget you need to add your own salt and pepper), and the Mandu-guk is good and safe for you wimpy eaters afraid of new things.

world canine freestyle
"Musical Freestyle is a choreographed musical program performed by handlers and their dogs. The object of musical freestyle is to display the dog and handler in a creative, innovative and original dance, using music and intricate movements to showcase teamwork, artistry, costuming, athleticism and style in interpreting the theme of the music. Heelwork-to-Music incorporates traditional dog obedience and the art of dressage with the inclusion of musical interpretation, dance elements, and costuming with an emphasis on non-standard obedience movements. Both Musical Freestyle and Heelwork-To-Music routines should create a visually exciting display which is enjoyable to watch and which is equally enjoyable to dogs and handlers executing the programs. Canine freestyle is a showcase that truly demonstrates the joys and fun of bonding with your pet."

mathew barney vs. donkykong
"Matthew Barney's Cremaster 3 begins a serious negotiation between art and video games. There have been exhibits and books celebrating game design in recent years, while digital art has introduced interactivity into museums. Painters have created canvases with game characters. Cremaster 3 lacks the obvious cultural references, but its absurdity, repetition, level design and use of landscape as narrative establishes a stronger connection to video games than these other works."

Till I read about it on Casper Woo's, I had no idea that a sequel to Desperado was coming out in September. Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Johnny Depp, Willem Dafoe, Mickey Rourke, and of course, Danny Trejo. Oh, and your favorite, Enrique Iglesias. I read it was shot two years ago and the studio has been holding on to it, so I don't know...but with that cast it should at least be fun to watch. Mickey Rourke! I watched the trailer and unfortunatly Depp looks nothing like a pirate. R!

We want to get them into your hands. If you've never bought a graphic novel before, we encourage you to browse the site. We've classified the books by genre to make it easier for you to find something that appeals to your particular tastes." Great site. Read graphic novels if you don't already. I know a lot of you who like to read novels don't because you never really read comics, and it hurts me, my heart. I know it's scary trying something new but graphic novels can be as enjoyable as a good "normal" novel. And if more of you start buying them, that means I have more people to borrow them from...

It clocks in at seven volumes and 3000 pages (it was originally 4000), about 300 pages longer than all five books in the Harry Potter series combined." Here's a site via slate.com that has a list of the writers they picked and a little info. I actually want to get "Granta 77: What We Think of America". That looks interesting.

marky mark
I really want to see the Italian Job but after I found out that there's a man walking around without an eye because Mark Wahlberg attacked him in 1988 (Wahlberg served all of 45 days out of two years), it makes me not want to see any movies he's in. I know he was a teenager when he did it and maybe he's actually changed and not a crazy racist now but...An eye! That's just fucked up and I can't stop thinking about Mr. Hoa Trinh walking around with a glass eye or an eye patch whenever I see Wahlberg up on screen.

Photobloggers vs. Camgirls
"One of the most interesting rivalries on the internet is the tug of war between the photobloggers and the camgirls for control of fotolog.net. How can you tell one from the other?" the Gothamist breaks it down. Funny, I noticed the same thing when I look around on fotolog.net. I'm a camgirl of course. Cept I'm a guy. But then, all pretty girls on the net are really dudes, right?

My mother's incredibly stupid ex-husband
"I can't believe I have waited this long to start this thread. My mother used to be married to a man named Chris. He wasn't bright. And he demonstrated this on a regular basis, doing many, many stupid things. This is the thread where Matos remembers those stupid things, and shares them with the group. " - from Luku! this site is so awesome: "The next day, he and Mike, this guy who lived down the hall and regularly beat his wife and stepson, went out to the apartment parking lot to wash the car, this time sans soap. I said, "Can I help you guys?" "No," said Chris. "That's all right. Washing a car is a man's job!" And he and Mike high-fived."

"The first two discs of The Singing Detective's three-DVD set contain the entirety of the six-part, seven-hour 1986 BBC miniseries, with optional commentary by director Jon Amiel. But the series' legion of cultists will likely head straight for the third disc, which features a small sampling of interviews with late screenwriter Dennis Potter, as well as a 45-minute BBC biography that explores the connections between Potter's life and more than 30 years worth of his BBC teleplays." I'm so glad this is out on dvd. I've been waiting to watch this since 1990 I think, when I first read about it.

Women in the Director's Chair- a second chance!
"For six days, twelve powerful programs drawn from the 135 films in this year's festival will re-screen as part of the special Encore Festival (see the complete line-up at www.widc.org). The onset of war in the opening days of the 22nd Festival had a tremendous negative impact: attendance was down by over 70%, and WIDC, a non-profit organization, lost over $20,000. In addition, scores of outstanding films and videos from around the world played to nearly empty theaters, as many Chicagoans were glued to the news, gathering with family and friends, or engaged in anti-war activities. Without the Encore, the festival may go down in history as the best film festival that (almost) no one saw! Women in the Director's Chair, its staff, volunteers, filmmakers, artists and co-sponsoring organizations throughout Chicago, refuse to let that happen."

earl dittman, whore.
Poor Chow Yun Fat. The commercial for Bullet Proof Monk had quotes from only one critic, gushing about how great the movie was. It was Earl Dittman, of "Wireless Magazines" who writes things like, ”Matthew Perry and Elizabeth Hurley (in Serving Sara) make an irresistible screen team in this sexy, zany and over the top road movie that breaks all the rules!". And "Along Came a Spider is "a tightly woven cinematic web of intrigue and suspense... An intense and riveting psychological thriller that will keep you glued to your seat!" My rule is if "Earl Dittman" is anywhere on the poster blurbs or in the tv commercials, I'm skipping it.

Stuff's editor cracks nasty about his competitors
Ha, I like how the editor of "Stuff" makes his magazine sound like the second coming of magazines and how he thinks every other men's magazine sucks compared to his. is he serious? is he high? am i missing something? did "Stuff Magazine" suddenly evolve from "Maxim"-rip off into something incredible(not to mention readable)? Or is it still mostly b-level tv stars in their undies next to a photo of the newest mp3 player on the market?

I saw Pam this Sunday and we stumbled on to "Everyday Elegance with Colin Cowie" on tv, who we had never seen before. He's a designer or something and he threw a dinner party to celebrate the color pink. TO CELEBRATE THE COLOR PINK. Pam kept clapping everytime Cowie put something together (like pink feathers in a vase) and saying, "I WANT THAT!" He was amazing. Pink fuzzy cozy covers for the bottom of coctail glasses? Cowie is a very tanned white guy with some vague Euro accent we couldn't figure out and comes off sort of like...maybe if James Bond was gay and was in the same biz as Martha Stewart? Superstar!

Wow, Charlie Finch calls Art Superstar (that's a technical term right?)Matthew (Mrs. Bjork) Barney a hack. With all the news about steroids in major league baseball, I thought this was a good interview. Funny photos. T: Do you think you motivate people? GV: No, I think I disgust people. why do people treat you strangely if you admit to ever having privately used a picture of klaus kinski? i just finished watching "my best fiend" & cannot believe anyone had anything to do with him, ever. i haven't seen a lot of his movies, maybe just "crawlspace" when i was a kid. terrifying. you should be him for halloween. -pam

I think I was the only one and now I've told you all my secret. I guess I'll just take my lunchbox and sit alone to eat my lunch.

God of Fruits
Has anyone tried the durian? I wonder if I would like it or be repulsed by it? I started thinking of it again because there's a deleted scene in the In the Mood For Love dvd and Tony Leung is chowing down on one and he looks like he likes it. If you ever had one, let me know how it was.

I was once at a shoe store with ida-red and she pointed out a shoe by Steve Madden and said that they were good for relatively cheap shoes. And then I started seeing ads everywhere with his name. It's like that right? Once something is pointed out you see it everywhere. Like orange clothes a few Summers back. Anyway, he's in the slammer. That would make a good OZ story.

cheese guy
artnet.com says: "Cosimo Cavallaro is a Montreal-born artist who moved to New York City when he was 14 years old. At present, he has a studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Cavallero is probably best known for slathering a New York hotel room with cheese back in 1999, bed, floor lamps and all. After that, he pumped 1,000 pounds of pepperjack cheese all over a frame house in Powel, Wyo., covering it inside and out, complete with furniture." And this is his website.

Ye Ye Girls
"Think of the 1960s, back when pop music had only just begun. An explosion of youth, optimism and the breaking down of musical boundaries. The first generation of teenagers in search of a soundtrack to their new freedom. New artists became pop stars, riding high on a tidal wave of energy. Imagine the French, inspired by the sounds coming out of the US and UK, taking ideas from the great girl-groups, the beat-groups and combining it with the best of the French chanteuse traditions... The result became known as the ye-ye sound; classic pop songs with a French twist." ---link from Tom2.

"This website contains scholarly investigations into the idea that you might literally be living in a computer simulation. Films like The Matrix and novels like Greg Egan's Permutation City have explored the idea that we might be living in virtual reality. But what evidence is there for or against this hypothesis? And what are the implications? The original paper featured here, Are You Living in Computer Simulation?, presents a striking argument showing that we should take the simulation-hypothesis seriously indeed, and that if we deny it then we are committed to suprising predictions about the future possibilities for our species." From Don who knows kung fu.

Attack of the Second Stringers
Hey comix fanboys and girls, this page has profiles of second string superheros like Jack of Hearts and Machine Man, you have prob. forgot about or never heard of. I don't read superhero comics but it's still fun for me to look at stuff that did not make the cultural cut. "I COULD OF BEEN A CONTENDER!!!!".... "Machine Man:History: The only one of 51 military robots to develop a "normal" personality, X-51 vowed to improve relations between humans and artificial life forms after the death of his "father," Dr. Able Stack. Many of his adventures came about because of his job as an insurance agent. " Wha? Insurance Agent? How could that not catch on? The superhero I created was "THERMAL MAN". He can keep cold drinks cold and hot drinks hot for up to 30 minutes with just his bare hands! But none of the comicbook companies ever called me back.

nytimes wes anderson article
Wes Anderson talks about one of my favorite movies L'Argent de Poche (Small Change)by François Truffaut. I use to watch this over and over on HBO as a kid. It might be the first foreign arthouse film I ever saw. It's considered one of his minor films and is about a bunch of French school kids (Truffaut is one of the only directors who used kids well in movies), kind of a comedy with some more serious issues such as poverty thrown in here and there among the jokes and "cute" stories. It was a good foreign film primer for me.

hawaii recipes
I think "local" food in Hawaii ("local" sort of means "blue collar type born in hawaii") is sort of a mish-mash of Asian meets Soul Food. And since most of the locals (Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Portuguese) were brought to Hawaii to work under almost slave like conditions on plantations for the white owners, that kind of makes sense. Someone make the kim-chee dip and tell me if it's good or crazy.

Langley Schools Music Project
Hey, it's out, you can order it now. "In the mid-1970s, Hans Fenger taught music in the Langley, British Columbia, school district, using an experimental method inspired equally by Brian Wilson and Carl Orff. Occasionally he would record his students in the school gymnasium--elaborate affairs involving more than 60 kids per session. The result is this compelling collection of semi-accidental genius. Picture the Shaggs and Danielson presiding over an elementary school assembly for shy kids, and you begin to understand how sweet, sincere, and slightly unsettling these recordings are. "-amazon.com Also you can listen to the story here on realplayer.

Thomas Kinkade
I had no idea about this guy untill I read about him in the NYT and the New Yorker. He's the most profitable artist in the US. People buy and trade their prints of his paintings and sometimes they take them into the galleries where the staff will "highlight" the litograph with paint to customize it. I'm not trying to be judgemental, I'm just really curious why people pay bucks for something that I would not put up on my wall even if they paid me. Why? Seriously, what's up with that? If anyone has a good article or book to recommend on "taste" let me know.

The Redmoon parade is always fun to see on Halloween in Logan Square. It's quite a sight. Once I bought a huge pinata from a local store in Logan Square for a Halloween party and was walking back and lots of people were staring at me, the one (at the time) Asian guy in the neighborhood walking around with a huge pinata. It must of been funny cause little kids were pointing. I got paranoid the little kids would start chasing me home, trying to hit the pinata with a stick.

Funerale a Los Angeles (1973)
Have you seen this movie? I saw part of it on cable a few nights ago and was fascinated. It's a super hard boiled 70's movie with an incredible cast. Ann-Margret AND Angie Dickinson, the ditsy woman from the Mary Tyler Moore show, Roy Scheider as a hitman, and little Jackie Earle Haley. Oh and Jean-Louis Trintignant who is the judge in Krzysztof Kieslowski's Red. He's the lead. I just looked that up. I was going to say I had never seen him before but I guess he's a really famous French actor. Remeinded me a lot of John Boorman's 1967 Point Blank and the Limey.

Prechance to Dream:In the Age Of Images, A Reason To Write Novels
Here's a link to what might be the entire Jonathan Franzen's Harper's article that everyone mentions when reviewing Franzen's hyper-hyped (I just made that word up I think)the Corrections. I have not read it yet but I have just read Paula Fox's Desperate Characters, which is used as an example of what a novel should be by Franzen in the article. It was very good and reminded me of Richard Yates' Revolutionary Road. So, speaking great American writers, did you guys see Anne Heche on tv? Oh man. Saturday, July 7, 2001

I found this on iso.pita's page. It's a cd coming out of pop songs done by some canadian school kids in the 70's and it's being hailed as outsider/folk music by critics. I'm not big fan of cutesy kids singing pop songs (shut up! i'm not!) but listen to the samples. There's something interesting about it.

Hmm, article on Gourmet magazine's editor Ruth Reichl. Her memoir Tender at the Bone was one of my favorite books the year the paperback came out. And this article says there is a follow up out this month. I hardly ever read memoirs but I'm glad I read hers. Funny, I think my favorite memoirs all have food as the main subject. J.F.K Fisher, Calvin Trillin, Reichl. When is Calvin Trillin coming out with more books about eating? I hope his stomach is not slowing down. It's happens and it is sad when it does.

nytimes article about chris ware
don sent this link to a story about chris ware, who is an incredible artist and ...novelist? cartoonist sounds wrong for some reason. if you are not registered with the NYT site, you should, it's pretty painless. but you can also use dirtynerdlover0 as a login, and dirtynerdlover as your password. it also works with doormen at fancy clubs. just lean in and whisper in their ear, " dirtynerdlover..."

Here's a link that plays a video of Christopher Walken in the new Fatboy video. He dances and flys around a huge apartment, all Fred Astair-like. I think it's a Spike Jonze video. Or Pam had it commissioned for her private collection. Oh man, watching Walken do anything is pretty entertaining so this is incredible.

dorothy allison
i'm re-reading "cavedweller." this interview is pre-cavedweller, but i'm posting it because it's one of my favorites with her. it's from the zine "fat girl" & she talks about a lot of difficult stuff that she's often alone in talking about, among established authors. which i guess is one of the things that makes her a hero to so many women. & dudes. -pam

When people don't get something you love, they tend to lash out and think you are putting them on or just trying to be "cool". I hate that. Lou Reed is one of those people that people argue about. I love him and so does this writer and he does a great job, around page two,of showing how a good record can make some of us feel so excitied and happy that it feels like it changed our lives.

the Smoker
Here's the short story in the New Yorker that I heard led to this guy's book deal. It's almost a guilty pleasure of a read. I really enjoyed it but at the same time I felt kinda guilty for liking it cause I realized a lot of my male, middle classed sensiblities were played with by the writer, used, so I would enjoy it. Oh well, I'm used to that! But still, this guy can write and more than one person called me up about reading this story on the train and just enjoying the hell out of it. And others who said, "what's the big deal-e-o?" You decided.

Holy Crap! Salon.com article about the Hernandez Bros, the creators of Love & Rockets, one of the best comix of the late 80's early 90's indie-comic boom. The author makes the argument that the female characters are some of the most "real" in American literature. This makes me happy. I like anything that gives more props and exposure to the Brothers.

the Treatment
"The Treatment: A "treatment," in Hollywood parlance, is a concise overview of a screenplay. On THE TREATMENT, "New York Times" film critic Elvis Mitchell turns the tables and gives the "treatment" to some of the most influential and innovative forces creating movies and popular art and entertainment" We don't get this here in Chicago (at least i don't think so) and I had no idea it was so good. Did a listing of all the shows available and wow, everyone from Vincent Gallo to Josh Whedon to Tim Roth to Allison Anders. Nice long Fresh Air style interviews. Not as good as Terry Gross, but better show biz guest selection. I'm listening to Josh Whedon right now and then I'm gonna hear who Gallo trashes. Mr.John C. Reilly has two interviews! I was reading the Onion this morning at breakfast (hamburger with avacado and side of fries at the blackbeetle)and Scott McLoud was interviewed. I read his "Understanding Comics" a long time ago and now he has a new one out. Understanding Comics was a great book for comic fans and visual artist, web designers, ect. Actually all I know is that it was a great book for me, a simple fan. But I've read that it's good for designers. Anway, here is his webpage. Funny, I never thought to check to see if he had one. strida bicycle
Is this folding bicycle cool or just really dorky? I can't decide. I kinda might want to buy one. But not if it's too weird looking and everyone ends up staring, like I have a frigging parrot on my shoulder or I'm riding a unicycle. I think this might fall on the dorkside. "Beware the Dorkside, Luke!" Gee, that was dorky of me to write. Shut up!!!

A fan site for the tv show "Popular". Also http://redrival.com/popular/ looks interesting. Don't be fooled into thinking this show is of the Dawson Creek/Young Americans ilk. I think the show started out as a 90210 clone and somehow it evolved into an over-the-top comedy/campfest. Really, really funny show.

i just deleted the iron chef link from a while ago, it didn't work anymore. but it felt wrong not having the i.c. represented on our page, so here is an unofficial site that covers specific episodes. it is a show that sydney & i love, but often cannot watch; because NOTHING you might have to eat in your house is going to be as amazing as what the iron chef is making. it makes me hungrier than any show ever, including the two fats. syd read that tonight's episode is going to feature pumpkin as the battle ingredient. it's going to be so good/painful... -pam

Dan Clowes
An interview with Dan Clowes, the man behind the comic book Eightball and Ghost World (which is shooting now with the director of Crumb). Daniel Clowes can go from funny to creepy to gross to sex to creepysexgrossfunny to something like Ghost World, which is a straight forward story full of minor chords. You ever hear Buried Treasure by Wilco? It's like that. Sadly beautiful. Go to amazon.com and check out the reviews. You know, in France and Japan comics are considered a...aw ferget it. Nobody in the US starts reading comics if they didn't when they were a nerd teenager. Actually I haven't been reading much in the way of comix myself in a few years. But did read From Hell by A. Moore. Liked it. V. disturbing, as Moore's fellow English person Bridget Jones would write. I miss Calvin and Hobbes.

the raging tide: or, the black doll's imbroglio
in memory of edward gorey, here is one of the few webpages still up where you can read an entire book of his. although he probably wouldn't appreciate it, since all the other ones have been closed down by his lawyer's request. anyway, just when i was thinking the news was less depressing than usual this morning, w/exciting washington protests & mugabe encouraging the land squatters, i saw edward gorey on the obituary page & it really is the saddest. the ny times obit said that he often wore a large raccoon coat, & used words like "jeepers". so andrew's been a copycat all along. -pam

90210 wrapups
in honor of there only being something like 4 episodes left, here is the best reason ever to watch 90. better than steve's lobster skin & lemon hair, better than donna's scary scary i don't know what's happening help me out of here i'm falling in tits. daniel drennan's hysterical, completely right-on weekly wrap-ups; which unfortunately had to end before this season even began as the entire thing was too sickmaking for him to handle watching anymore. it'll make you call in to work & watch reruns of it all day. even if you've seen them before, you never realized brandon was playing pocket pool throughout the entire series. did you? it makes it all new again. a love rekindled. -pam

Dear Mr.Seitzman: Please Kill Me Now
So a couple of weekends, someone, who shall remain nameless, asked me to go see Here On Earth. I got to the theatre and had my hand on the door but I couldn't let go the handle, couldn't make myself step inside. How bad could it be? I asked myself. I turned around and took a nice, long walk instead. Well, the author of this "letter" to the screenwriter didn't turn around or leave during the film (as my friend ended up doing). But it was worth it cause she wrote a pretty funny letter about what might end up being the Worst Movie of 2000.

the Village Voice Pazz and Jop Poll list
This is THE LIST in my opinion and Robert Christgau is still one of my favorite rock critics. He hardly ever steered me wrong as I used the yearly Pazz and Jop as a musical guide when I was growing up in the 80's. Like the older, musically hip cool brother I never had(and his influence stuck. I hardly read him anymore but his top picks always seem to match mine at the end of the year closer than almost any other critics or friend). The printed version use to be the best thing for the music nerd who likes to read, with it's millions of little essays and comments (funny, mean, and sometimes enlightning) from Christgau and other critics from all over the country ("Stephin Merritt does that thing the real stars do. He makes you feel lonely, then giddy, then he gets you thinking: "Is this craftsmanship? Or is this simple? Geez, I've thought stuff like this before." Then the crucial clincher: "I bet I could write songs like this.""- Gina Vivinetto St. Petersburg, Florida) , and and it looks like they didn't skimp on the web version (click on "comments"). And it has sound clips for almost every song, and you can see which critic voted for what. And some great essays("Moby and Merritt Vs. Hitters and Cheerleaders in a Bad Year for Nerds" Hey! Is he name dropping Dirtynerd? Yes, in Andrewland) from Christgau and his top picks for 1999. I hope when I'm his age I'm still open to new music the way he is, and not sitting around just listening to my collection of antique MP3's from 1999.

You can laugh at me if you want but I like the show VIP a lot. Everyone is wearing sexy clothes, the story telling hums along at just the right "so bad it's good" level (which is really hard to do I think), and Pamela keeps making fun of herself. I was never a Pamela Anderson fan but now I think she proves yet again that Canada is giving the U.S. the best comedians. I think it's just as good (actually, better)and realistic as Friends or ER or any of that Thursday night NBC stuff. It's sort of like E! in a fictional, narrative format. But with much better production values. And please, it's not like all you guys are watching is Nightline and Charlie Rose when you get home.
